Stop the Violence

1779814_580928401992776_2090129991_nToday is alpha Kappa Delta Phi’s National Violence Awareness Day. We come together as a sisterhood to talk about this issue and to take action in honor of one of our sisters, Valerie Zavala, who became a victim to a senseless act of violence. The sisters of UF changed their profile pictures on Facebook to photos of them holding their own individual messages in order to show support for the #NOMORE campaign and bring awareness against domestic violence and sexual assault.
In addition to the social media campaign, we tabled in Turlington, handing out ribbons in Valerie’s favorite color. Along with the commemoration to our fellow sister, we provided other students with the opportunity to take part in our #NOMORE campaign to write a message as to why violence needs to end now.
1654348_581186485300301_2025337157_nAs someone once said “The time for complacency is long gone, has passed and belongs to another era.” It’s time to respond to the cries for justice because if left unaddressed, the effects of violence can remain with one for a lifetime and can manifest from one generation to another. Let’s stop the statistics, it’s time to say NO MORE!
For more information on the NO MORE campaign visit: Also visit us at Turlington, while we hand out ribbons and commemorate our fallen sister Valerie Zavala who was a victim of sexual assault.

Nancy Nguyen for Miss Vietnam

1560438_10202478220813472_887044158_nOne of our very own sisters  has entered  the Miss Vietnam Florida Pageant! #31 Nancy “gaLaxii” Nguyen is in the running for the Miss Vietnam title. The competition is to take place this weekend at the Central Florida Fairgrounds in honor of the Vietnamese lunar Tét festival. For the pageant, each contestant is to raise as much money as possible for their each respected philanthropies. Nancy has chosen the Make a Wish Foundation as her philanthropy.

Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every thirty-eight minutes to a child fighting for his or her life. Make-A-Wish Foundation began granting wishes in May 1983 and more than 226,000 children in the United States have benefited from the hope, strength, and joy of experiencing their one heartfelt wish.

While Nancy has said herself that the decision to enter the Miss Vietnam pageant was initially last minute, she has put 110% of her efforts into raising as much money as she can for her philanthropy and taking home the title. With the support of all her sisters behind her, we’re sure there’s nothing that can stop her! Help us support Nancy by helping her reach her $650 goal (make donations here or at donation bins left in local places such as the UF AASU office and even restaurants such as Bagels and Noodles, Pho Hanoi, and Lollicup) and maybe even dropping by the Central Florida Fairgrounds this weekend to see her in action!

Sister Spotlight: Lien Tracy Dang

The amazing and admirable sister being recognized this week is the exquisite #49 Lien Tracy Dang, or should I say “E<3mental.” This loving sister truly knows no bounds in giving back to our sisterhood. Although working possibly 2 jobs and other various extracurricular activities, Tracy always lends a helping hand. Why do you think our CASA New Year skit was so awesome? (Yup, that’s right, Tracy was the key figure behind this success.) In whatever she does, she immerses herself in her work 110%. Ya’ll better watch out; this girl is in her “element.”

Sister Spotlight: Julienne Somera

The beautiful sister being recognized this week is the one and only #75 Julienne “LumièRe” Somera. No wonder she’s now Sparks Social Media Editor! Please enlighten us some more, Ms. “LumièRe.”

Sister Spotlight: Lynn Phu

This week’s spotlight is awarded to the enchanting #74, Lynn “Calypso” Phu. This inspirational individual always delights us with her smile and astounds us with her aspirations. Not only doing Pacesetters, but practically everything else, she is constantly improving herself. You will definitely be “charmed” by her, Calypso.
